Colorado blue spruce
We have had a blue spruce in our front yard for almost 32 years. And it was at least 8 years old when we planted it. The color of ours is more green than blue, but this variety of spruce can appear blue- green. The branches are strong and the needles are stiff and pointy, approximately 1” long. Customers with curious pets seem to prefer this tree because of its prickly nature. As a christmas tree, its needle retention is not as good as some other species, 3 to 4 weeks.
White Pine
We have had seven white pines in our front yard for almost 32 years, too. They are tall elegant trees with long needles, approximately 4”. Unlike the spruce, the branches of this tree are soft and not sturdy enough for heavy ornaments. I decorate a white pine with white feather garlands and light weight birds. Branching pics complete this more natural look. It has a nice light piney fragrance and the needle retention is good, 4 to 6 weeks.
Scotch Pine
This is the christmas tree that we had when I was growing up. The branches are strong and the needles are sturdy. Needle length is about 2”. This popular tree is easily decorated because of its strong branches. Needle retention is good, 4 to 6 weeks.
Canaan Fir
Originally called west virginia balsam fir, it is native to isolated pockets in the mountains of west virginia and virginia. It has similarities to both fraser and balsam fir in growth and appearance. The branches are sturdy, but the needles are soft, short, and dark green in color with a silvery underside. It is fragrant and like the balsam its scent is immediately associated with christmas. for christmas, I decorate either a canaan or a balsam fir for the entry of our home. Needle retention is good, 4-6 weeks.
Balsam Fir
Like the canaan fir, the needles on this tree are short about 1” in length and soft. The branches are sturdy enough for all but the heaviest decorations. It has a sharp, piney frangrance that reminds everyone of north woods forests—and christmas. As noted above, I switch between a balsam and a canaan fir for one of the decorated trees in our home. It has good needle retention, 4-6 weeks.
Fraser Fir
This is the tree i put up in our living room. It has sturdy branches, lovely dark green needles with a contrasting silvery underside. It is a beautiful tree, of course, but i love it particulary for its scent. I smell citrus notes when i crush the needles. It is easily decorated because the branches are sturdy and the needle retention is good, 4-6 weeks.
